oats stand the test of time

There are many health foods that claim to be good for you but not all have decade-long studies to prove it.

The American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine has just published a review on oats, and studies over ten years showed that the grain has lived up to the claims of reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Almost all of the research on oat’s effects reached the same conclusion; Eating oats may reduce blood concentractions of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol without adverse affects on levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol or tringly-cerides.

Oats have the highest proportion of soluble fibre of any grain, which helps in bile acid excretion. This is turn reduces cholesterol levels in the blood.

Make oats your breakfast choice-start the day with a bowl of oatmeal or opt for products that are rich with the healthy grain such as cereals, multigrain breads and fortified milk drinks.
